Help! My Air Conditioner Isn’t Working! What You Can Do Before Calling The Professionals.

January 8, 2019

Air conditioning is pretty much a necessity considering the warmer summers that we’ve been having and technicians that will work on your equipment are kept hopping during peak months. That’s why you need to be sure you’ve got a few double-checks in your back pocket that you can try before you call in the pros when your unit isn’t working at optimal efficiency. Take a look to make sure that your filters aren’t the problem. They need to be changed out every 30 to a year, depending on the MERV rating, more often if you’ve got pets with lots of dander and hair that can clog up the filters more quickly and force the air conditioner to work harder. Dirty filters can also cause your unit to shut down, not to mention reduce life expectancy, if the inside of your unit goes over a certain temperature. You’ll want to be sure there’s nothing blocking the intake and outtake for your unit as well. Along with washing the outside condenser coil at least once a year, you need to cut back any shrubs, weeds or grass that might be obstructing the free flow of air. Anything that hinders this flow will cause your unit to work harder than it needs to, adding wear and tear to the machine and increasing your energy costs. Remember there’s no need to call in professional technicians unless they’re needed. If your air conditioner won’t work at all you might just need to flip the breaker switch or even turn the thermostat from hot to cold. While you’re standing at that thermostat, remember to check the temperature to make sure that you’ve set it lower than the current reading so the air conditioning will kick in. If all these fail, we at Oosterveld Heating are here to help. Simply give us a call and we will schedule one of our qualified technicians right away!
