Why D/C Motors are the Right Furnace Choice

January 7, 2019

Energy efficiency. Those are two words that everyone can relate to these days whether you’re interested in environmental concerns, putting a few dollars back into your own pocket or both. While most of us know the bigger appliances in your home play a major role in cutting down on the cash you fork over to heat and cool, not everyone knows about the ‘hidden’ benefits of something like D/C motors as the intelligent furnace choice. First off, these motors have some design advantages that separate them from the permanent split capacity units used in many furnaces today which become less efficient at half speeds. This isn’t the case with the D/C motor model which uses less electricity to circulate fresh air throughout the house. Indoor air quality is one of the priorities for today’s family and having a D/C motor as the backbone of continuous air ventilation saves on energy costs according to research done by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) published in 2005. The benefits of these motors extend beyond ventilation to the heating and cooling seasons as well. During the cooling season, CMHC statistics showed there were savings on the electricity used for the air conditioner compressor of around 4 per cent. When it came to the winter months, switching over to these brushless D/C motors with integrated controls offered the use of natural gas at near 90 per cent efficiency on top of the significant reduction in the amount of electricity used. Although these numbers do point out that the savings drop when homeowners don’t run their furnace fans continuously for air circulation, the CMHC suggests the health benefits to running these motors continuously without an increase in utility bills is the better overall plan.
