What Size Hot Water Heater Do I Need?

January 7, 2019

Eventually your hot water heater will need to be replaced. Before you do so, it’s a great idea to understand all the different options in a hot water heater so you can make an informed decision when the time to replace your current unit rolls around. Here’s a few hints about the hot water heater size you’ll need. We recommend for 2 to 4 people who don’t use a large Jacuzzi tub and keep their consumption moderate, a 40 gallon tank will work just fine. A 50 gallon tank works well for 4 to 6 people and for those with that large Jacuzzi tub or six people all showering at the same time, a 60 gallon tank is the way to go. We don’t recommend tankless hot water systems here for a few good reasons. The first major reason is tankless models don’t supply the promised endless supply at a minimum flow rate and they are much more expensive than conventional models. Some of our customers say, “but Rick, they say that it will save me money…” but that’s not the case. The facts are you’ll use more water getting the system going than you do with a conventional tank and you will waste more water this way. Also, just like your car, it takes more electricity to get the unit up and going than it does to maintain it at a constant temperature. Tankless models require more maintenance than conventional units. These are all factors that won’t be good to your pocketbook.
