Make Sure to Check Your Fireplace Too

January 8, 2019

Everyone enjoys those cozy warm nights in front of the fireplace. These family gatherings are made all the more relaxing when the proper maintenance schedule has been followed and you know all the critical elements of your fireplace are in good working order. Here are a few good areas to concentrate on when it comes to fireplace checkups. A gas fireplace or insert will provide years of enjoyment if looked after properly. The fan and other air circulation passages should be cleaned on a regular basis. Vents need to be checked to be sure they are unobstructed. Vacuuming the firebox and heat exchanger is a good way to keep things running smoothly. For a more traditional wood burning fireplace or even an insert that uses a traditional chimney, creosote is can build up and become a hazard. A professional chimney sweep will clear any obstructions and potential problems. Remember to clean out any ash that’s been left over, but open the damper first to prevent a mess inside the room. Electric fireplaces don’t need as much in the way of checkups, but light bulbs needs to be replaced once every two or three years. However, these do give off a certain amount of heat, so you need to be sure they are far enough away from combustible drapes and other materials. Regardless of the kind of fireplace you have, it is generally a good idea to be sure nearby fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are in good working order. It’s even wise to keep a fire extinguisher on hand just in case. Oosterveld Heating and Air Conditioning is a family-owned and operated business servicing Guelph and the surrounding areas.
