How to Improve Your Air Quality in the Winter
The winter months in Ontario, are not as harsh as in other parts of the country. However, they can still have an effect on your air quality. Modern homes are built with higher standards and better materials than in the past. While the tightness of your home is great news for your heating and air conditioning bills, it can be bad news for air quality. If fresh air can’t get in, stale air, with all its impurities, can’t get out. At Oosterveld Heating & Air Conditioning, we have some tips to help you breathe easily throughout the year.
Keep a Clean Space
The dust, dirt, and pollen from the outside are often tracked into the house where they can get into the air. Make it a policy that people take off their shoes and leave them by the entrance to the home. Vacuuming frequently also removes irritants from the floor before they can cause trouble.
Change Your Filter
Many homes already have a filtering system as part of a central heating and air conditioning system. To be effective, this filter needs to be changed regularly, every 90 days for the average home; monthly if you have pets. Larger filters with a higher MERV rating filters last longer and are more effective than normal filters. so long as you remember to change them once a year. If someone in your home has respiratory issues, you may want to consider these larger filers that can remove extremely small particles including respirable dust, odors and even viruses.
Add Some Ultraviolet
A newer innovation in air quality is treating the air in your climate control system with ultraviolet light. The light is installed in your ductwork where it will not be harmful to home occupants. However, it will be harmful to viruses, bacteria, and other microbes floating in your air. Alternatively, it can be installed in a filter cabinet on the side of your furnace with a Lennox PureAir system.
