Helpful Hints For Choosing The Right Sized Air Conditioner

January 8, 2019

There’s not enough that can be said about having the right sized air conditioner. When you’ve got the one that suits your needs and the size of the area you want climate controlled, the hottest seasons will be comfortable. That said, there are a few criteria that will help you to narrow down your choices. Although the size of the unit is at least partially determined by the square footage of your home, there’s more to it than that. There are other factors that need to be taken into account like construction, since different materials insulate differently, the general climate as well as the number of doors and windows and the sizes of each. The orientation of the entire structure plays a role as well. When you’ve got a place that has larger windows that face east and west you’ll more than likely need to take that into account when you’re looking at the size of the unit that’s best for you. Remember the R value of the insulation in the walls is another determining factor as is thermal efficiency rating of the windows. All the information is processed and your needs are matched up against a unit that has the designed SEER or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher that number the better the unit works. Remember that getting the right sized unit doesn’t necessarily mean that bigger is better. An oversized air conditioner will turn on and off more than it needs to and that wastes energy and put a strain on the compressor. On the other hand, an air conditioner that’s too small will struggle and never keep your home completely cool.
