Furnace Tips for the Holidays

December 17, 2019

Your home’s furnace is the primary tool used to keep it warm and comfortable during the holiday season. Therefore, it is critical that you understand how to keep your heater running efficiently and how to avoid turning it into a potential safety hazard.

Don’t Store Anything Near the Furnace

It is critical that there is plenty of room around the furnace to ensure proper airflow and ventilation. Ideally, you will keep the Christmas tree and lights in the garage, in a shed, or in a spare room. Large gifts for the kids or your spouse should also be kept upstairs where they are less likely to present a fire hazard.

Don’t Store Chemicals Near the Furnace

You may feel compelled to clean the house before your guests arrive for dinner or to stay with you during the Christmas holiday. However, you should make sure that bleach, ammonia, or other cleaning agents are kept away from the furnace. Toxic fumes could eat away at the heater or ignite with little warning. It is also important to remember that chemicals in a pet’s urine could wreak havoc on a furnace. Therefore, it may be a good idea to let your animal do its business in a spare bathroom or outside as opposed to in the basement.

Have Your HVAC System Inspected

It can be a good idea to have a professional from Oosterveld Heating & Air Conditioning inspect your furnace and other HVAC components before the weather turns colder. If any problems with your furnace are discovered, we can take care of them in a timely manner. An inspection may also give you an opportunity to ask questions about having your furnace replaced.
